Applications Open for GeoSpace Group 5 in Húsavík

The Exploration Museum has opened applications for GeoSpace Group 5, which will bring up to nine young people together in Húsavík this November for a unique program combining space exploration, geology and fieldwork.

The 2026 group will consist of up to three students from the United States, selected in partnership with Higher Orbits, three students from Iceland and up to three international students selected by the Exploration Museum.

GeoSpace draws inspiration from the geology field training undertaken by Apollo and Artemis astronauts in Iceland. NASA astronauts trained in Iceland in 1965 and 1967 ahead of the Apollo lunar missions, while a new generation of Artemis astronauts visited Iceland for geological field training in 2024 and 2026.

During their time in Húsavík, the GeoSpace students will take part in fieldwork and activities focusing on geology, exploration, teamwork and leadership. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their fieldwork, as well as other topics they are passionate about, during the Explorers Festival, which will be hosted in Húsavík for the 12th time this year.

Participation in GeoSpace is free of charge for all selected students. Through a partnership with Hótel Húsavík, the Exploration Museum can also provide participants with substantial discounts on accommodation during their stay in Húsavík.

How to apply: The Exploration Museum is accepting applications for three Icelandic and three international places. Applicants should submit an essay of up to 300 words describing their passion for space and exploration.

Applications should be sent to info@explorationmuseum.com no later than September 10, 2026.

Selected candidates will be informed on September 15, 2026.

GeoSpace Group 5 will take place in Húsavík in connection with the Explorers Festival, November 19–22, 2026.
